Can an EV charger be connected into my existing consumer unit?

Usually not without alterations. BS 7671 Regulation 722.531.3.101 requires each charging point to be individually protected by a suitable RCD rated at no more than 30mA and to disconnect all live conductors. For a charger with suitable DC fault-current protection, this is normally achieved with Type A protection; without it, a Type B RCD may be required.

E-Fix normally includes surge protection in line with Regulation 443.4.1, Section 534 and the charger manufacturer’s instructions. A separate small EV distribution board is often the cleanest way to provide the correct protection without disturbing existing circuits.

Can the existing cable feeding my garage be repurposed for an EV charger?

Usually not without a full assessment. The existing cable must be suitable for the charger’s continuous load, cable route, installation method, voltage drop, earthing and protective devices.

Load balancing also needs a reliable connection to monitor the house supply. E-Fix normally uses EV Ultra cable, which combines the power conductors with data cable in one neat run. Some chargers can use a different communications method, so Nick will check the charger and route before deciding whether any existing cable can safely be reused.

Can I supply my own EV charger?

Yes, provided the charger is suitable for the UK, complies with the Smart Charge Points Regulations and its manufacturer documentation supports a compliant installation.

For a typical PME supply, the design must address open-PEN protection under BS 7671 Regulation 722.411.4.1. It must also provide the required DC fault-current protection: Regulation 722.531.3.101 requires protection against DC residual current above 6mA, either within the charger or by suitable external protective equipment. Most established UK smart chargers include these features, but E-Fix will verify the exact model before agreeing to install it.
